Around shanghai are various water towns. The weekend Narelie visited, we went to Tong Li and Zhou Zhuang (the supposed "Venice of China"). This was also the weekend that it really snowed in Shanghai.
Our only goal for going to Tong Li was the Acient Sex Culture Museum. But the tour ticket we paid for included a stop over at this lonely little island that had nothing on it but a temple and a mini-lake in the middle. We had more fun building miniature snow men while trying to ignore our frozen toes than exploring the things in the temple.
The Sex Museum changes your view that china is conservative. Jeesh. They had the kama sutra engraved onto bathroom tiles, pictures hidden on the underside of teacups (demure seduction?), and dildoes made from every conceivable material!
By the time we reached Zhou Zhuang, we were freezing, hungry, and tired. But the canals with the little boats and boatmen were picturesque. Such a a contrast from the hurried, harrassing, busy life in Shanghai. Such a pity that the city is so commercialized. You dont get to appreciate the essence of the place thanks to the hawking locals offering everthing from dried crabs to beaded bags from their shops lining the canals. The price of economic survival.
At the end of the day, it wasnt the places we went to or the things we saw that mattered. It was the memories made and the friendship that was strenghtened that made it all so special.

Shobe's surprise...balloons and a green swedish cake. =)

It wasnt easy giving her the surprise, coz she got home while David and i were sticking her "happy bday" sign on the wall, and we havent hung the balloons yet or wrap her gift or prepare the cake. So being the nice and considerate roomates that we were, we made our bday celebrant wait outside the apartment in the freezing january weather until we were done. At the very last minute, we realized we ddnt have candles for her cake! Resourceful and ingenious pinoys gid kami...we used the only candles that we had in the appartment... red scented votive candles from Ikea. hehehe =) Basta may na blow sha nga candles ah!

Note: Hanging balloons from the ceiling while perched on an unstable couch could be potentially dangerous to your health...

Her birthday dinner at Malones. Yumyumyummmmy burgers!!!!
Thanks shobs! =)
